Tilley Hats - Enhancement Question

I see Tilley hats mentioned from time to time on threads about hats.

My little town actually has a Tilley vendor - the folks who run the raft trips in the canyon. I'd ordered up a catalog from the Tilley website and last week I stopped in to the raft company to eyeball their Tilley hats.

I came home with an LTM6 Airflo.

My question is, has anyone ever "enhanced" or "decorated" their Tilley in a manner that makes it seem more Celtic or more Scottish? Like add a cap pin or a flash or a tartan headband?

I need a lightweight hat out here in the desert heat and the LTM6 certainly is that. Don't know how well it'd hold the weight of a cap pin - and I need the brim down anyhow.

Thinking small pins like rodeo guys put on their cowboy hats, or a lightweight tartan flash or headband. Something to somehow connect it with kilts I'll be wearing it with.

Any examples or ideas appreciated.

The only mod I've seen to a Tilley was a different hat band. Of note they were standard issue to the Canadian armed forces until they adopted the boonie hat. A much sought after hat now, image a camo Tilley. They are also issued to the Candian Coast Guard in navy blue and embroidered maple leaf and dolphin crest.

Tilley's head office main store is about 5 minutes away from my place, I really should go in one day, as for mods I've seen a pin or two like you say the small ones and a different hat band.

I've placed a clan crest lapel pin in the mesh in the front just below the top and I put a Scottish Festival pin in the mesh in the back. That's all I've done. I wear it that way no matter what I'm wearing.

I can't really envisage any addition or alteration to my Tilley hat that could be counted as an improvement.

If you absolutely have to, something small and discrete, but otherwise I'd say leave well enough alone.

Be aware that on a hot day a metal decoration can transmit heat to the scalp sufficiently well to do considerable damage. I saw a quite spectacular burn about three days after it was achieved by using a metal broach on a hat brim.

I agree with Pleater, there is very little to be done to improve a Tilly hat. Ok, I know you may all groan: "there's that old twit Jock going on again" but------. Those of you with different tartan(clan) kilts and wishing to wear tartan or clan badges on your Tilly or any other bonnet for that matter, do please remember to match them up with the tartan of your kilt, it is one of those niceties that ought really to be observed.

You know Ron, I've never thought about augmenting my Tilly. I was lucky and found a TM10 at a swap-meet that fit me for a great price.

The Aussies regularly add a cap badge on the side or front and I like that look.... Don't know why it wouldn't work with a Tilly.

I've also seen side mounting on the sweatband, but can't locate a flic right now.

If you go to this thread you'll see several pics of WalkerK sporting a clan badge on the front of his Tilley.
