    A bit of advice?

My problem is that I would like to make an X-Kilt over the summer if I can find the time. The only thing is that my mom is rather antagonistic to the idea of me making, let alone wearing a kilt. Any ideas on how to convince her otherwise?

    well

Take to for a drive through a bad neighborhood, like mine, and show your mom round, and then she will be happy and comfortable knowing you are safe when shes hears the sewing machine going in your bedroom.

I don't think that would work, as I'm rather attached to my safety, and there's not really any "bad neighborhoods" that I know of within a few hours of where I live.

Have you though about showing her some of the posts on XMTS? Are you close to a region that hold kilt nights? Bring her along.

Also, introduce yourself in the Newbie section, you migh get more ideas form there.

Tell her you failed school, started smoking, crashed the car, got a tattoo and want to wear kilts... then tell her 'just kidding, except the part about kilts.'

On a more serious note, maybe if your kilt wearing corresponds with something more purposeful she'd understand. Not that you need a reason, but mom might like it more. Going to a highland games, playing bagpipes/drums, or having friends with kilts might make it make sense to mom.

Does your mother object to your sewing anything or is it just about the kilt?

Do your homework. Present her with a sound cause why you wish to wear a kilt, and your desire to sew it yourself. Wearing a kilt these days is nothing more than freedom of expression.. Expressing ones desires to honor their ancestory, or even to express ones own individuality. Everyone has their own reasons to wear a kilt, and they are all right.
In this day and age, sometimes it's cheaper to make ones own kilt, especially if they have that talent, I do not, but luckily we have kiltmakers in this forum, who can provide me with what I desire. It's a gift to be able to sew, and sew well. We have numerous members on the forum, who not only make their own kilts, but also for their friends and family. What also good, is the help you can get, when you get stuck.
A little homework, to be prepared for presenting your side of this request, can help remove her doubts about your desires and abilities. I wish you luck, and know you have so many resources right here at X Marks the Scot.

    Question

Generica, you're just too ... too ... um, generic. Since most mom's don't mind if their daughters wear skirts, most wouldn't mind if they wore a kilt so I presume that you are a son. If you're family isn't Scottish or Irish, she might be wondering what's the point. Since it's already summer, it can't be that it's too cold wherever it is that you live. If your mom has always supported you in your sewing endeavours in the past, it could be because she thinks you're wasting your money (or hers) on material or your time (your grade average is low, you're not working enough for next semester's expenses). She could be old school enough to think that kilts look too feminine: Rent Braveheart or Rob Roy and expose her to Mel Gibson and Liam Neeson. In a pinch, rent So I Married An Axe Murderer with Mike Myers for the wedding scene.

Otherwise, make her a nice skirt on your machine for her birthday and show that you have the skills.
