Most likely Gurkhas. Their pipers wear trews in the Douglas tartan.
In terms of Scottish expat societies in India and Nepal, I haven't seen any web presence for them, but I'm sure Bombay and Calcutta both had St. Andrew's Societies at one time. Perhaps sending an e-mail off to the British Embassy would do the trick? They tend to keep track of such organizations.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am pondering whether to take a kilt. It might be just excess weight that I would never wear. I tend to go native. It makes life simpler....and cooler!
It would be interesting to run into remnants of the Raj there, 60 years on. I know that they exist, though not terribly fashionable or politically correct at the moment in most circles.
