You can chose not to wear one, but you can't just disagree with the fact of tradition and expect that to be the correct answer. So yes you are wrong, but you will never be forced to wear one, that choice will always be yours.

Here are most of the sporrans I have and use now.
I bought a basic black with silver plate and 3 tassels as my first (Not shown). It was part of a kilt package. I still wear it sometimes but many mass produced sporrans don't open wide enough and I didn't like the tassels tapping against the front when I walked.
So I started making my own, without tassels and with a wider opening front to back. Several of you have been kind enough to request I make a unique design for you and I have enjoyed doing so as a hobby.

Here are my two black ones that I use from casual to semi-formal. I like the rampant lion on the right. The design on the left is an adaptation from the clan badge of Clan Hay.

These are my brown sporrans. The one on the left and the one on the right are self-made. The one in the middle I bought, but added the badge on the flap. It is post 1918 Royal Engineers, I'm told and I usually wear it with a brown belt with a US Army Corps of Engineer Castle on it. (I was Engineer Branch)

This white one is my formal sporran. It is only rabbit, but I like the silver mounting and black tassles. I have it in mind to make my own some day when I find the right cantle, but this will do for now.

I want to make one more, a black sporran with a red welsh dragon on the front to go with two welsh cilts I have, but that will be a winter project.
Here is the design in silver, but I have made a couple with a red dragon.

There are several other very skilled leather workers whose work I admire, but right now, I'm satisfied with the type I'm doing.

You are right. I have never been one to follow traditions.

I think you are doing a great job and if I were a bit of a craftsman when it came to leather I would give it a shot, well done.

So far, I've only got three (and only a pic of the one):

--a Buzz Kidder country sporran (my first)

--the utilitarian Stillwater nylon cargo sporran (everyone should own one)

--and my main "first line of defense"--the Thorfinn #109 (Turpin makes a NICE sporran, and buffalo hide ROCKS!)

I'm in the process of buying a couple more - a casual leather and a less-fluffy formal!

    I will second that.

The buffalo hide is a wonderful, soft, yet durable leather.
Turpin does in fact make a wonderful sporran!
