I don't think they tried a new formula over here but they did change the label which used to contain French as well as English and was a great way of learning some French words!

La Sauce HP est un mélange...d'épices est des fruits orienteaux..
Elle est absoulement pure et ne contient pas...

See I can still remember some of it after all these years!

OK. I'll bite and ask the stupid question: What in the world is HP sauce? And am I the only one that's never heard of it?

The 10.5 lb bottle is for bathing in. I hear that the Royal Family does it quite frequently -- apparently it's the secret to their longevity!

I hadn't heard of it either, seems to be a 'British' thing, I wonder how many of our condiments in the States they even have over there...

Name a few and I am sure someone can tell you. A cultural exchange of condiments ? To start off, have you got Worcestershire (pronounced Wooster) sauce?

By the way, HP is a yummy, spicy sauce, the closest thing I can think of in Burger King or MacDonalds (using those, rightly or wrongly, as cultural proxies for the US) is probably barbecue sauce, but HP is sort of fruitier and less smoky (describing sauce is difficult ).

In the UK there are red sauces and there are brown sauces. The red sauces are, of course, tomato based.

The brown sauces are to a varying degree molasses based. HP sauce has, as well, dates and tamarind extract. It's been going since 1899 and calls itself 'The Original'. The label shows a picture of the Houses of Parliament, hence HP. In cafés, if one orders a sausage or a bacon sandwich, you are usually offered the HP sauce. There are those that like HP sauce so much that they have HP sauce sandwiches without anything else inside.

    Regards

    Chas
