Father's Day and a Question...

Hello all!
So my wife told me upfront that she and my 18 month old would likely not be able to afford a kilt for Father's Day this year... Understandable as I'm the only one working right now and essentially I would be buying it for myself! lol However! She was able to conspire with her mom and they bought me a copy of "The Art of Kiltmaking"! This makes me a VERY happy father!! Barb, many thanks to you and Miss Stuehmeyer for such an amazing exploration into the ART of kiltmaking!! I've learned SO much and though I have very little sewing experience (see 'none'), I truly feel like with my seamstress wife looking on and tutoring me, I could actually make a kilt!! Wonderful feeling and I look forward to starting it!

Which brings me to my next question: In my search for woven, non-fusible hair canvas, I found something made by Pellon that seems to fit the bill... Found here. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? Is it strong enough for the purpose of a traditional kilt?? It seemed to have all of the properties that the book describes yet I seem to remember that the book says the "Pellon-type" wouldn't work.... Any thoughts??

See this thread for multiple sources of the stuff that Barb likes. The eBay listing sounds good, but better safe than spending all that time just to find that the underpinnings aren't up to snuff. There's not that much diff in price.

....I THOUGHT I had my fabric... I found some stuff at Joann's (yeah yeah... shoulda known... I know)... I was a Blackwatch tartan poly/rayon that I hoped would work... Well, it was a 43in width.... So I gritted my teeth and bought 8 yards knowing I would have quite a bit of waste.... (perhaps a kilt for one of my wife's cats??? One IS a Scottish Folds!!) So I got it home, threw it on the scale and it only weighed a measly 9oz.... DANG IT!!! lol Now I am a confident man but to make a kilt out of material that lite in the 'lowlands' of TN where the winds can sometimes be a bit stout.... I think that's where my confidence runs out! haha Back to the proverbial drawing board....

Pellon only makes non-woven interfacing and doesn't make woven canvas interfacing. I went to the Pellon web site, and their product list doesn't include anything with hair in it, so I don't know why this particular eBay seller says that this is a Pellon product.

I'd steer clear and order hair canvas from a reputable dealer, such B Black and Sons. The link is in the post that Sydnie refers to above.

Freudenberg, the former owners of the pellon brand, certainly do make hair canvas, and used to sell it as Pellon branded product. It's sold as Vilene branded stuff these days, and not to consumers. (at least, not in the US. maybe in the EU, dunno.) I don't know when the change occured (pellon's consumer products changed starting a couple years ago, almost entirely for the worse.), but I wouldn't be surprised to find old stock around for years.

that said, the stuff on ebay is a rip off. It's three times what it costs from someone like B. Black, and it's only 22" wide. (stuff from tailor's supplier is 60 to 72 inches.)

I just finished retrofitting my canvas kilt's front apron with the Black and Sons heavy Hymo that Barb has suggested. It did what I wanted it to do. It says it's polyestor and rayon, so I ran the kilt through the washer in a mesh clothes washing bag, and the hair canvas looks just fine. Can't report on repeated washings yet, though.

It's good stuff.

I stand corrected. I only looked at what they _currently_ market, not considering that they might have sold it in the past.

Very interesting! Yeah, if I'm gonna order something off the internet, it may as well be the good stuff, especially if you get so much more as vorpallemur pointed out! Thanks alot guys! This board rocks!
