I am the last person to ask about modern kilt matters! But you asked a reasonable question that requires a honest reply.Before I go any further, I must say that, what and how any one wears their clothing is entirely down to the individual and most certainly, it is not down to me!

However, I have my likes and dislikes! For starters I do not consider the modern kilt to be a kilt. I don't know how else to describe them politely though. You are obviously very happy how you wear the bag on your hip and that is fine and it does the job of a sporran. It is not a sporran though, therefore what you are wearing, to my eyes, is not a kilt. Others will no doubt dis-agree with me, rather loudly!

I rather expect that you will not be too surprised by my answer and I mean no dis-respect to any one.

That's the answer I was looking for- an honest one from a traditionalist. The kilt I'm wearing is not (to my knowledge) a modern kilt. It's a wool saffron- and my Grandpa O'Leary would go to blows with you for referring to it as anything other than a kilt! "...stubborn as mules..." as the song says... Crazy old Irishman... You know- that's the one and only reason I'm glad to be rid of two of my grandparents. If I wore a MacLeod tartan kilt, my grandfather got mad at me because it wasn't Irish! If I wore an Irish saffron, my granny MacLeod got mad at me! They are why I got my first Amerikilt- that way, they could be mutually displeased and finally agree on something!! Gods bless them... I miss them so much.

So Jock- I asked you in particular because you give good answers in a way that is helpful and not judgmental. So thank you! I have wondered about this ever since I got the thing. I do of course not wear it for anything other than the most casual of occasions, but I did wonder a little.

So to clarify things a little- my mom's dad was the Irishman, and my dad's mom the Scot. You say "PHEW!" and from his reputation at the local German bar that he used to take my German grandmother to, you should! We went there after his funeral and the owner bought us all a round in his memory. He was not actually a violent man- he was just a stereotypical Irishman, full of a love of whiskey and shinanagans! He was just a "take no guff" kind of person- which my mother tells me is where I get my attitude from! "You're as bad as your grandpa!" (It was the shinanagans part that got him his reputation... )

Ted with the greatest respect to you and others, I honestly don't consider anything other than a traditional style kilt, worn in the traditional way, be that tartan,plain, or, tweed, to be a kilt. What ever else is worn, pretending to be a kilt, really does not count as a kilt, to my mind at least. That does not mean that the wearing of the traditional style kilt should be solely restricted to the Scots though. I do wish that some one somewhere could come up with a fair and reasonable name for these modern forms of dress to avoid all this confusion and until some one does this unsatisfactory state of affairs will exist.

Way I see it, cousin- it's all a matter of different points of views. I say, we all agree to disagree. If we all thought the same, the world would be a dull plave, indeed!!

How about this, Jock? It's not a Highland kilt. We have to call it a kilt because of the rules, but that doesn't mean it is the same as the kilts of Scotland. And because neither Nighthawk nor I were raised in Scotland, I think we're both Newmexicans, our language is a little different from yourse.

I can't speak for Nighthawk on this, but the Highland "Kilt" is not the same as the contemporary kilt for me.
