Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochow, 1st Lord Campbell, 1635. (This is not exactly a portrait, considering Sir Duncan died in 1453.)

John "of the Bank" Campbell of Ardmaddie, 1749

Thanks for putting dates with your images. If possible, it'd be very helpfull for others to go back and put the dates with their images as well, both when painted and when it was supposed to be depicting if it differs from when it was painted.

Good point. My original post may have suffered from imprecise language - sorry about that. I just was noting that the "rules" may not have been as imuttable throughout all time as some may think, and therefore giving support to some (but maybe not all!) of the modern versions of kilts.

I'm not trying to start a debate. Just a variation on "thinking out loud". Feel free to ignore.

Prince Charles Edward by an unknown artist . Though unlikely to have been painted from the life, it shows the Prince wearing the kind of clothes he wore in the rising.

The Pinch of Snuff, painted by William Delacour in 1750.
