Started with a home made kilt in black denim, then SWK, USAK, and TANKS.
SWK Standard or USAK Semi-trad is the way to go to start. Both emulate the traditional with due respect. Contemporary kilts are nice for work, and sometimes at the beach.

I thought I would chime in here and say that I'm currently my Amerikilt. I actually own two- one I never wear any more because it's made to the jeans waist, and having started as a wee lad with a traditional, I kept wanting to pull it up to the correct height, turning it into a minikilt. I really liked the thing otherwise, though, so I ordered one and asked for a tradition rise. I love my AK. So for a first kilt? I think it all depends on your personality. How comfortable are you with yourself? What is your personal taste?

I would think that it would depend on environment as much as on the person to be wearing it. I was at university when I started wearing a kilt and I have to say that a modern (being a black Utilikilt) went over very well in that area. I was in the college of arts and they were not totally uncommon ( I had seen 1 on campus before I started wearing mine). I was well accepted and recognized for what it was at that time. I woke in IT for a living now and it would be recognized here but not as well as a traditional so that is what I wear predominantly now. just my experience for what it is worth.
thanks,
Jeremy

Yeah, I got the dress comment yesterday from some guys in a truck. I'd love to see them do that to the local pipe band... made up of cops.

Ya know... I've yet to have that problem. Maybe it's because I'm a 290lb, biker lookin' guy... Or maybe it's the slightly crazy glint in my eye.
