It's probably unwise for me to answer, but from what I have read from MacMillan of Rathdown et al, the black dress Argyle is just fine for black tie events. That is not what you are talking about though with your green Argyle.
So, I suggest a green regulation doublet , or the other doublet, I never can remember how to spell it, that is a lower cut doublet.
I guess there are other formal jackets that can be in other colors, but...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
