Prince Charlie/Argyll
longhuntr74 mentioned on the 'going to the ball' thread this line regarding attire at a formal event:
"A Prince Charles jacket and vest (You could also possibly get away with an Argyll jacket as well...but it's generally considered a semi-formal coat compared to the PC)."
I only have a green Argyll jacket as, I feel, a black PC looks yuk when next to my green/blue/brown Hunting Fraser kilt.
Any deep thoughts out there as to why I should get a PC just to be, well, pc?!
p.s. No offence to longhuntr74 intended. it was just a comment more broadly on perceptions in the kilted world of real men.

It's probably unwise for me to answer, but from what I have read from MacMillan of Rathdown et al, the black dress Argyle is just fine for black tie events. That is not what you are talking about though with your green Argyle.
So, I suggest a green regulation doublet , or the other doublet, I never can remember how to spell it, that is a lower cut doublet.
I guess there are other formal jackets that can be in other colors, but...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

There is no reason why you can't have barathea cloth made in another colour if you wish. A PC in very dark green looks OK. There are other formal styles of jackets to consider too,I am a fan of the sheriffmuir, mine is made of a very very dark green velvet. The other option is to get another kilt made with a brighter Fraser tartan(do they have a dress tartan?) and then wear a black formal jacket. Just a few thoughts.

The sheriffmuir doublet was what I was trying to think of, but I couldn't remember how to spell it.

Good lord Ted, don't rely on my spelling!

I would always recommend a sheriffmuir (spelt the same as Jock said) as well. A PC is a one type of event jacket and anyway everybody wears them.
Here is the sheriffmuir done formal -

and here a bit more casual -

Same jacket, two different occasions.
Plus it fits around a wide range of waistlines in case yours happens to expand over the years!

Could a sherriffmuir be worn with a waistcoat in a formal setting? I am thinking a 5 button rather than a 3 button (covers up an expanding belly).

Phil has beaten me to the draw! The answer of course is yes. I prefer the non tartan waistcoat myself, it seems to be a western highland thing(mostly) to wear a tartan waistcoat. What do you think Phil?

Thanks to you both.
Phil - that is so cool - I want one for every kilt I own.
Jock - you answered my next question before I had a chance to ask it.
Now all I have to do is find a sherriffmuir!
Regards
Chas
