Hmmm, ok, thanks for that. Now that I think of it, I do sort of recall seeing a photo of the actor, Fred McMurray, in a kilt.

My avatar is from a political cartoon from 1861 depicting President Lincoln in a kilt. Although he never wore one, he was ridiculed by the press for sneaking into Washington under cover for his inauguration. Death threats that he recieved while travelling by train to Washington forced his hand into stealing out in disguise from Harrisburg, PA (against his wishes) and travelling to Baltimore then on to Washington. He did so mainly for the protection of his family who had been travelling with him. He probably wore a scottish bonnet and a cloak that was inevitably transformed into a kilt by the political cartoonist of the day.

I think I was refering to FDR not Teddy.

I came across this humorous kilted tall tale in my search for a kilted president. I got a good laugh out of it:

Didn't Alexander the Great (or one other famous personage) use (starved) suckling calves as instruments of interrogation against male prisoners? [Kramer-esque YEE-aaahhh]
The spirit of the Declaration of Arbroath (6 April 1320) abides today, defiantly resisting any tyranny that would disarm, disperse and despoil proud people of just morals, determined to keep the means of protecting their families and way of life close at hand.

The Air Force Pipe Band played at President Kennedy's funeral at Mrs. Kennedy's request. He was very fond of the skirl.

No, it was a reference to Teddy Roosevelt that I posted -- a letter decribing a Canadian friend wearing Highland attire in Puerto Rico.

Along with Black Watch pipers and drummers, and Irish Defence Force cadets pipers. The Company of Military Historians has a plate depicting the event.

Would you mind posting a larger version, please, or a URL to where you found it? I'd love to have a copy to show my students in my Civil War class.

I know but someone quoted me thinking I was refering to the letter.

It's okay though, the world hasn't exploded.

Well... this may not be presidential, but that may be to his credit!
