Well, I got mine. The missus and our only bairn went to check out some tile. JoAnn's was just down the road a piece from the tile outlet store so I hooked iron over there. They had at least a fifteen different plaids from English Accent there. I grabbed the only bolt of Cunningham and bought five and a half yards. The cutter asked me what I was going to do with all of that fabric. I said, " Make a kilt." She said, "This is Cunningham, right? Did you get enough to have a fly plaid? There's some Black Watch over there too." Then we had a nice conversation about her making costumes for a production of Brigadoon and me working in the theatre. Hopefully I can have it built before the Oklahoma Scottish Festival next month.

jgcunningham - look cousin go back and get the rest of the bolt. You know that you want a box pleat and a knife pleat and pleated skirt for your wife (use the X-Kilt pattern ankle length and apron folds backwards.

If you see abbreviations, initials or acronyms you do not know the Xmarks FAQ section on abbreviations may help.

My wife is mostly Dutch and has just a little bit if Scottish blood from Clan Donald in her ancestry. She frowns on my kilt-wearing, insisting that I only wear it to festivals. I try to disappoint her. My son refuses to wear one, even though he thought it was comfortable for the 5 minutes he had it on.

I was in Joanne's this past weekend and they actually have several Fall plaids on display. Don't know how many are "tartan's", but there are several very nice plaids.
In my experience, this fabric will work for kilt making, it does hold pleats nicely and is medium weight. I make them with a Sportkilt like pattern which is basically a wrap skirt with pleats fastened with velcro. They look good, they are good summer / fall wear and the general public doesn't really know the difference (even if they cared). If it's plaid and knee length, the assumption is "kilt".
I plan on purchasing a couple of different fabrics and making a couple more kilts. For some odd reason, I can never have enough kilts -- don't know what that is.

You can always find some tartans among the plaids at JoAnn. They some out with materials for the school year. I was at a store and they had Stewart Black. Probably others too, except I wouldn't recognise them if I saw them.

I bought some of the Black Watch the other day but returned it upon realising it only weighed in at a whopping 9oz.... *grumble grumble* Also a bit frustrating that the bolt was 43 inches wide; had to buy like I was buying single width knowing I would end up with a LOT of extra fabric from my 8 yarder I had in mind... Oh well!
Hopefully the fabric you bought will come in a bit heavier... I just didn't feel comfortable wearing such a light kilt for my first one...
Did you notice that the Stewert Black had a some metallic thread in it???

No metallic thread. It was polycotton, probably 9 or 10 oz. like you found.

Hmm... I'm a little jealous... I first spotted the Stewert Black but the one here had a metallic thread in it so I picked up the Black Watch...
