A Kilt of My Own...

Hey guys, I'm new on this site, and stumbled upon it while looking for ideas for tartans. I've played the bagpipes for many years, and have competed solo and with a band for a few years now. I currently wear the band issued kilt, which is the Ancient MacDonald of Glenaladale tartan (it's very handsome). The thing is, I've never owned my own kilt, and now I'm itching to get one so that I have something different to wear in either solo competition, doing gigs, or just for wearing on special occasions.

So, I'm looking for a darker tartan to complement the bright, flashy MacDonald I currently wear. Clan heritage is not that much of a worry to me, since I don't really love any of the tartans of family (MacLeod), but I just want to be happy with the kilt. If anybody has any suggestions on some darker greens, blues or greys and blacks, I would love to hear them. I'm new to the kilt thing so any help would be very much appreciated.

Well, if you don't mind acrylic, Stillwater Kilts has a tartan called the Nightstalker. It is, of course, universal. I got the last of the wool ones a couple years ago, and it is a handsome and nicely understated tartan.

I would imagine as a piper you would want a kilt that is a little more substantial; something resembling what you currently wear. If you are looking for a darker tartan featuring grey and black, why not consider a kilt in Lochcarron's Highland Granite or the House of Edgar's Hebridean Granite?

You don't mention your location/citizenship, but consider the American Heritage tartan, available in wool or high quality poly-viscose from USA Kilts.

Slohairt, you are right, as a piper I would be getting the same kilt as I wear now. Turns out, I'm about 20 minutes away from you in Elora, Ontario. The kilt would be made by possibly Burnett's and Struth's, or from Ben Bhraggie House, and I'm not sure who makes their kilts... it's maybe Burnett's and Struth's again.

Rob Wright, I've been looking around at Douglas tartans, and they're one of my top choices right now. As for a MacLeod, it's a possibility, but I'm not really that keen on it.

I'm a Lewis on my paternal grandmothers side of the family and and I tend to shy away from the LOUD MacLeod (yellow/black) but I do like the looks of the MacLeod Hunting. It would be a nice contrast to my Clan Cameron Kilt.
