I myself wear either mid calf Docs or lineman boots with the same socks mentioned in the link I just roll them neatly into about a 3 to 4 inch cuff just below the knee.

Regarding the "scrunched " socks thing...
There's "scrunched" (which I happen to like)
...and there's "neatly folded down"... ya know, just so's we grok that there's a subtle distinction.

Well, being allergic to grass I tend to wear high socks with my Utilikilt, usually a few inches below knee level.
Not the wool kilt hose, but rather a light cotton actual sock. The last few I got were a knee-high athletic sock but I also have a green and black pair of what must be thigh-high dancer's hose, but they are a good elastic that stay up without help.

Hi guys, I actually got the diamond rib knee high socks and have been wearing them out and about with these shoes, since I haven't gotten around to actual shoe shopping yet. I quite like it with the socks up to my calves, they let more of a breeze in than I figured they would. (Too bad the shoes are wearing out! :P)

Rugby Socks
You can always try some rugby socks as they come to just below the knee and they come in many colors.

Actually I wear my swat boots with socks turned down over the top laces. Works so well with my utilikilt.

US Army & USMC boot socks are a great alternative for kilt hose on hot summer days. The Army ones are sage green and the USMC ones are olive green/brown. Without the roll-down they are about the same height as kilt-hose but are much cooler and more comfortable on sunny or muggy days.

I tend to wear my Keens, Burks, Merrells, or Wolverines. Depends on what I am doing that day.
Grilling...Sandels,
Kayaking...Keens. Though it is odd wearing a skirt over a kilt.
Chilly weather (below 30 F)...Merrells
Work...Wolverine
Hiling...Rockies, with smartwool socks.
All that matters is that you are comfortable in your kilt.
