Here in the mountains of West Virginia, winters can be very cold, but I find that my kilt and hose provides sufficient warmth. The knees are mostly bone, so the cold for me is not a major issue. It's the upper extremities that count. A good coat, scarf, and bonnet should do. Just my humble imput.

A Stillwater Heavy Weight, cable knit sweater, heavy kilt hose, proper hat and a leather waist length jacket did fine in the streets of Denver at -3F one late evening a couple years ago. In fact, a young lady in jeans came around the corner and said "You're CRAZY!" as she was shivering. I was standing there with the jacket open since I was too warm.

A nice heavy weight is VERY helpful in winter. Not only is it inherently warmer, but will help save your modesty (for those that HAVE modesty)...

Now I have to ask: Robert, what is that black jacket in the first pic?

Here's a thread I posted last winter. I added a winter coat, of course, but I was fine moving between the car and the theater.

I fully intend to wear it in the summers, our harsh eastern canadian winters. I wouldn't tell you I'll shovel the yard in one, but you know. Frankly with my 16oz 8 yard I think I'd be far more likely to wear it in the deep winter and than in mid summer. I'd rather be kinda cold than power warm... though I hear wool breathes well.

With my terrible circulation knees down, massive hose will be the critical part.

Its basic physics - heat rises. I've found even a USA Kilts casual is comfy in cold weather.

Warrior in USA Kilts casual on a very cold day at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon..

Frazier in USA Kilts casual high in the Eastern Sierras at Bodie, California after an unexpected three inches of snow in early June this year.

If you want to really gear up for winter then the 22oz WPG kilts mentioned, or any 18 ounce wool kilt. Or check out the leather kilts from Utilikilts and RKilts. Leather is wonderful in foul winter weather.

Here's my brown leather Utilikilt out on the Navajo reservation in winter.

Do remember the physics though. Once was at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on a very cold day. Everyone is asking if I'm cold. I'm not. Kilts are very toasty. Then I stopped in to an unheated rest room and when I raised the kilt all the heat flowed out and I felt the cold. But it didn't take long for the heat to build back up after I put the kilt down.

Some scientist could probably explain why kilts are warmer than pants in cold weather.

Thinking about this over a year ago I remembered girls at my bus stop in Connecticut in the 60s and 70s. They would wear skirts, knee socks. I wondered then how they did it. Later I just noted that they were able to do it. Heavy coats, hats, mittens, mini-skirts. Worked for them. Has to work for an old guy like me.

Sorry, I'm not a scientist, but can explain it.

Part of it is what you've already commented on: heat rises. The other half of the equation is the same way thermopane windows work: dead air. As a general rule, the more dead air you trap around yourself, the better insulated you are... ;)
