Sir, I beg you : Please put back all your lovely photos if you still have them somewhere.

Here's a picture that I discovered in a family album that belonged to my maternal grandmother. The picture was taken circa 1890 in Alpena, Michigan. I don't have a name with the picture. An assumption would be that he is a family member of the McRae family -- my grandmother was a McRae -- her parents were Adaline and Duncan McRae. I would be interested in any comments about the picture.

David and I rented the DVD of The Duchess, the 2008 movie based on the life of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, as portrayed by Keira Knightley. Georgiana landed her title through William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. In Wikipedia, I was following the succession of Dukes of Devonshire, reaching the 9th, Victor Cavendish, who was appointed by the well-kilted George V as the 11th Governor General of Canada, succeeding Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, also appointed Governor by George V, his nephew.

There I came upon this photo of Prince Arthur in this Scottish finery.

A very large version is also available.

    Regards,
    Rex.

You can just see the handle of his dirk (which matches the sgian dubh), and doubtless the sword would have been part of the suite. He is also wearing the cordon of the Order of the Thistle, in case anyone was wondering what the "sash" was.
