Difficult one to call. Practising my bagpipes in Glen Nevis around ten years ago while wearing a Black Watch kilt, with my dad and Ann watching, and having the tourists gather round to listen and take photos comes high, one of the reasons I want to re-start with the pipes and learn to play properly rather than just a few simple tunes with the grace notes missing. I like to think the best days are yet to come, there are a lot of ambitions I still want to fulfil in life and I'd expect to be wearing a kilt while I achieve them.

This is a very tough one…

…and I might change minds in a few seconds, but what comes to me in a flash is visiting Bec Hellouin monastery. It just felt so right to be there kilted.

A very poignant moment whilst kilted was in the Canadian military cemetery of Dieppe in Normandy. My hairs still stand on end just to think about it.

A warm memory springs up of me dancing with my little Louise in Italy a few years back.

These were all quite unique moments. But a few more would come back to mind if I sit back and think at it for a while, so I guess I’ll just stick with those for now.

    Best,

About a year ago, in October, the Sonoran Scotsmen had the idea of just going out and having a nice formal dinner at a nice resturant with everyone. I believe we ended up going to PF Chang's, a upper scale Chinese resturant here in Arizona (I don't know if there are in other states).

Anyways, there were about 14 of us that showed up for dinner that evening, most of the kilted gentlemen were wearing at least a button up shirt, some wores ties, a vest, etc. Everyone looked good. Then Craig (Retro Red) shows up dressed in his full Prince Charlie. I thought, "Well, now I look underdressed". I asked Craig why he went all out and he said "Well you said formal, and I don't get to wear this very often".

Continuing on... Dinner was great. We were in downtown Tempe and after dinner we were all looking for someplace to get a dram or pint. Someone mentioned that Octoberfest was going on about 2-3 blocks away at a beach park in downtown tempe. We all laughed and thought, why not. So we walked down to Octoberfest, and got some drinks. It was hilarious to hear the arguments people were having as we walked past.

Some people would say "I didn't know that the German's wore kilts" and you would hear someone else say "Duh, of course they wear kilts, where do you think they're from?" and we'd all just laugh it off. Then we all grabbed a table near the stage and listened to a great polka band. I really wish I could remember their name, because they were awesome and a lot of fun to watch.

After the band was done, I decided it would fun to get a big group picture with everyone still there in kilts and with the band and their Lederhosen. Here is that picture, and there is my best memory of being in a kilt.

    Slainte!

This one's a no brainer for me. My favorite kilted memory is definitely my wedding. It was the first time I'd ever worn a kilt; my Rose Hunting Modern 8yd. I have lots of pictures but they're not online. My wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary a few days ago.

Rather long story but I'll try to keep it short. My wife and I had a friend who was divorced and had three young children. The youngest boy and I took and immediate liking to each other that grew over the years. Planning his wedding he & his wife decided to have a kilted wedding and he asked me to help him get it together. On his wedding day he called me to come help his best man and groomsmen to get kilted. I got them kilted and we had a beautiful ceremony. On to the reception and having a grand time when it was time for a drink. Got in line at the bar and he was in line about five people behind me talking to a young woman, when she asked who the white haired gentleman in the kilt was ahead of them. I heard him tell her "That's my Dad". That was my most memorable time kilted and I doubt anything I do from here on out will surpass it. By the way, he still wears a kilt and is a member of XMarks, but I won't tell you who.

Mine would be the evening event in Edinburgh Castle last summer where my wife took the picture of me in my IoS and full Argyll kit and my then 3 month old son in his infant MacDonald kilt and hat. Great food, great company, kilted in the capital castle of the "homeland", barely 4 miles from the seat of my family clan, seeing the crown jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Scone, and having a 45 minute pipe band serenade, all right in the courtyard of the Edinburgh Castle itself. Talk about a rush of heritage to the brain, topping off our first full day in Scotland seeing the sites and walking the Royal mile.

That, INMHO, is one of the best photos that has been posted on Xmarks.

I think my best one is yet to come: competing in a few weeks with my pipe band at the McPherson (KS) Scottish Festival, standing in the circle next to my 12-year-old.

However, my best so far is just a slice of life... I was watching the game in a Sportkilt Hunting at a high school football game. My son's in the band and drumline. At one point, a woman who I know has a Masters in nursing and is a licensed attorney needed to get by my wife and I. I was on the aisle so I just got up and stepped out to make life easier on her. She saw what I was wearing, smiled broadly and complimented me by saying, "Nice skirt! I love it!"

Needless to say, I was somewhat taken aback, but I decided to take her at face value and assume it was a compliment. I really don't think she meant anything mean or negative. Maybe she didn't know it was called a kilt, which is fine, but I was surprised she'd say, "Nice skirt!" instead of, "You look really sharp in your... boy, you sure look nice."

Anyway, as I took my seat again, still a little stunned, a woman sitting behind my wife sat, shaking her head. Finally, she said, to no one in particular, "We killed the English for less than that."
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!
