Your Favorite Kilted Memory

I have very fond memories of performing with the "Black Watch" in Madison Square Garden during the Bicenntennial. Also of being the Honor Guard for HRH Princess Grace of Monaco during one of Her visits to the U.S.

For me: it was early 2000, a few months before my early retirement, and we had an evening party from my work. My collegues knew I owned a kilt (Royal Stuart), so I wore that for the first (and last) time in front of them. It was a great evening. By now, I am a full time kiltie for years.

I have had few experiences wearing my kilt... but the time I first stepped out in public, wearing my SWK Saffron kilt.. I was a bit unsure of what to expect.. I was down in LaGrange, Texas, a German/Czech community and I stopped in a store I frequented, and received a lot of positive comments.... I, then, drove over to Houston, for the Highland Games and met Zardoz, Jack Daw, and a few other XMarkers... I had a great time, and felt at ease in my kilt, and at home with XMarks.
The other time was getting my Leatherneck 4 yd box pleat from Freedom Kilt, putting it on for the first time, and having my girlfriend tell me I look very good in my kilt. I plan on marrying her one day, and with her being from Mexico, I was not sure how she would react to my kilt... turns out she likes my Falda Escosés.. Seeing how some onboard have not so positive reactions from their family, it was great to know she likes mine.

I suppose it was my wedding to my second wife. First time was in top hat and tails which was the fashion mostly in those days. My new wife is a kilt fanatic and I was glad to oblige. Haven't looked back since.

Being a kilted newbie, barely a month into the fun -- I suppose the obvious answer is -- my first time out being kilted doing my normal day to day stuff and then going to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville PA with my wife, shopping at Walmart, and then going to a diner for supper.

All in all -- a most excellent day

I suppose it is a work in process, but at the moment it would have to have been Piping the Candiates' Parade for El Zaribah Shrine, with my oldest son amongst the lot.

As many others have already said, a few of my own favorite kilted moments were too outrageous to qualify as family-friendly. Actually, some of them would by some people be considered downright family-hostile!

But my favorite activity in a kilt, as in any other garment, is my Hogmanay do. Nine course meal for 20 people, white tie, excellent food and excellent wine, single malt whisky in responsible quantities till dawn.

My favorite times, in about 6 months of having a kilt, have been wearing my kilt with the Clan Claus in the Holly and Shamrock Parade on St Patrick's Day at the Celebrate Santa Convention in Gatlinburg TN and at the Ohio Highland Games when the Clan Claus got a standing ovation from the grandstand audience during the parade of tartans.

I know that it's predictable, but my favorite kilted memory was my wedding day. Not only did I get to publicly join my life to my perfect partner, Abby,

but I got to put all my closest friends in kilts for the day,

and my mother-in-law pulled me aside to say how great we all looked and to apologize for doubting me in choosing kilts for the guys.

Last night I think I added a second favorite kilted memory. My new(ish) boss for my part time gig had us designing the sound and technical production for a benefit starring Carol Channing. As a new company, my boss has been looking for a hook, and I joked: "we should all wear kilts then we can tell everyone that the guys in the kilts work for the production team." Well he took me seriously, so the two of us kilted up for the rehearsal last night. And hearing Ms. Channing sing a mix of Gospel songs from her new album, and some of her classic numbers gave me chills. And I got to do it kilted!!! I get 4 more hours of rehearsal before the performance tonight. (We will be kilted during the show as well). Ms. Channing is very charming. OK, i now have to shower and then we have some gear to acquire to make the show go better
