David and I rented the DVD of The Duchess, the 2008 movie based on the life of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire, as portrayed by Keira Knightley. Georgiana landed her title through William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. In Wikipedia, I was following the succession of Dukes of Devonshire, reaching the 9th, Victor Cavendish, who was appointed by the well-kilted George V as the 11th Governor General of Canada, succeeding Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, also appointed Governor by George V, his nephew.

There I came upon this photo of Prince Arthur in this Scottish finery.

A very large version is also available.

    Regards,
    Rex.

You can just see the handle of his dirk (which matches the sgian dubh), and doubtless the sword would have been part of the suite. He is also wearing the cordon of the Order of the Thistle, in case anyone was wondering what the "sash" was.

Boys in Kilts - Aran Islands circa 1935

    From the website:
    Record Number DWT-100
    Title Aran Islands.
    Collection D W Thompson D W Thompson
    Image Type lantern slide
    Originator D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson
    Location Co Galway, Ireland
    Date 1935

    Description
Three barefoot children in skirts or kilts and cloth caps, by drystone wall in village lane, cottages behind.

    Notes
    DWT-100 (ms 45721/iv) pc/
    D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson teaching slides.

DETAIL: Two of the children have what appear to be school exercise books, the other has a shoulder bag.

BIOG: D'arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860-1948), Professor of Biology at University College, Dundee from December 1884 to December 1917, when he took up a chair in Natural History at the University of St Andrews, remaining here until his death in 1948. His main areas of research were evolutionary cell structure and fisheries. He was also a mathematician, bibliophile and classicist, writer and lecturer of renown and was knighted in 1937.

ADD: The tradition of dressing boys as girls on the Aran Islands until about seven years of age possibly began as a protective measure and dates back to the times when Viking raiders would plunder the islands and kidnap male children to use as slaves. Although it may also be a form of Celic kilt. A fable then grew up that the boys were dressed as girls to prevent the fairies taking them away.

After receiving the news of his son's death Sir Harry Lauder went on stage that night and sung 'Keep right on to the end of the road'. What an emotional night that must have been.

Queen Victoria in a pony cart w/ Highlander leading...

I posted this in the media section here with questions asked about it that we can discuss over there.

Since this is a historical vintage film (reputed to be at Balmoral circa 1896...though I question if its not in fact earlier), I thought it most appropriate to share in this gallery as well.

    Enjoy!

The first sequence shows her in a carriage at Balmoral in 1896, surrounded by her grandson, later George V, and various other courtiers, including Indian dignitaries or perhaps household staff.

There is a partial glimpse of a Highlander leading the horse of the carriage -

The second shows the queen riding down Pall Mall in a carriage with perhaps the later Queen Mary and Kings George V during her Jubilee Celebrations of 1897.

Here, first, are three stills captured from the video (note another kilted Highlander in the background, you will see either him again or a 3rd kilted gentleman following the pony cart towards the end of the first film):
