    To All,

This thread is straying far off topic, and worse than that, members are not showing respect to one another

So am I! I had no idea this thread would take off as it has and I am rather proud of the fact that points of views have been aired, points have been made, people have thought, people have disagreed, people may have even learnt something and courtesy has prevailed. Xmarks can be proud. Can we keep it that way, please?

There are also a few pictures published here that say something like "This is me on my wedding day", or "Kilted on my son's graduation day" they are not asking for an opinion they are just making a statement. So we then look at the pictures and lo and behold they have got it all wrong! A "Sir Shaun" moment! What are we to say?Do we make a comment or six?Do we ruin a person's memorable day? No of course we don't! We could say nothing, that is what I usually do I am afraid, or , we could find something nice, kind and non controversial to say, as some of us do. Or, less helpfully in the long run, we get "looking good","great tartan", "great outfit" by people who either know no better themselves, Or are trying to be kind------I am not sure what to think, but it perpetuates the problem of ignorance. These tricky situations are coming less and less here as time goes on, I think------thank goodness for education! On the other hand we get the "this is my new outfit for the ball/wedding/graduation/birthday next week. What do you think?" Then we have an opportunity to make helpful(I hope) suggestions, if needed, that may fine tune an outfit to be a model of perfection and YES a picture to use as a fine example to us all for future reference. The trick is though, sorting out one from another, BEFORE parting with the hard earned cash.
Very well said, I think, and all too rarely said these days...and even less so taken well.

The bolded phrase (my emphasis) is something I see painfully frequently in regards to homebrew fabrication..."omg looks great keep it up !!1!" in reference to a booger weld that'll be lucky to hold a swift kick, much less a violent impact from a three ton vehicle. Whether it's kilts or bridge building, improvement depends on the ability of those of you with experience to gently, but firmly, pass their knowledge on to those of us who are still learning, and those of us who are learning to keep our mouths firmly shut when we begin to speak at the limit of our knowledge and experience.

Personally, I think there is far more harm in misplaced compliments...the road to hell, and poor taste, is paved with good intentions. I would rather see "that's a great first try, overall well done! Here's how to improve it," than "you look good, carry on" when there's something blatantly not right. Put simply, there are many effective ways to help or inspire someone to do something better, without putting them down.

The obvious way, of course, is to post an idea...photoshop some pictures together and ask for feedback, or put it on and ask how it looks...preferably before buying ;)...and understand that opinions are like armpits, equally capable of being clean or stinky!

I remember a quote, don't remember the source, but it went something to the effect of "don't look down on a man unless you're about to help him up."

    Oh, and DFTT .

    -Sean

It's rather strange how the same topics and threads (and same ol' arguments ) come back every other year...
