Long Goat and Horse Hair Sporrans

They all look pretty impressive to me. I have a two dangler horse-haired sporran and am looking for a good occasion to wear it. I also acquired an antique boy's horse-hair sporran - unfortunately my 'boy' is almost 25 and the same height as me.

I'm in the process of making a sporran. I have the hinged brass cantle done and hopefully will get the angora goatskin stitched in the next few weeks. The cantle was a challenge but fun to make. I do like the look of the curly goatskin.

I have two horsehair for piping, but I've been considering a goat-hair for formal and semi-formal.

I often get compliments on my hair sporran when I wear it, generally for more formal occasions.




I was lucky enough to find this one many years ago at a vendor selling military antiques and collectibles at the Williamsburg VA Scottish Festival. I won't tell you what I paid for it, but it was a steal!

One thing I like about this one is that it actually has quite a large, functional pocket, unlike a lot of hair sporrans one finds today.

I wouldn't mind having an antique style goat hair sporran one day, though. I think for civilian formal wear, hair sporrans can add a really nice touch, but personally I favor styles that don't look like military replicas or generic band sporrans.

Those pics were brilliant, not only do I want a sporran like that now but I got a multitude of new "over the top" sartorial ideas to try.

They look very different from each other....the goat ones are much shorter "fur" that is wavy and more scraggly looking with an uneven bottom on them. Horsehair sporrans generally are much longer (extending to nearly the bottom of the kilt) and are almost always cut flat across the bottom.

Can you folks with these sporrans provide any clues on how the long hair is attached. Horse hair is pretty easy to find and this may be a fun project. I saw one member who "latch hooked" the hair to a mesh back but I'm wondering if there is a better method. Any pics or advise would be great.
