To make this doubly brilliant, I was actually called on September 11, 2009 by the Captain,

Okay, you may need to explain this to me.
A tour of duty? limited contracts or something?
Is this like a volunteer part of the service?
Or is there a limited sign on period? I'm honestly interested, and not trying to be a smart @rse or anything, its just different from NZ.
Regards
Phil C

it varies from Dept. to dept. but baiscly a tour is defined as the time you work.
My Dept's tour is a 5/6 schedule...5 days on with a day off in between then 6 days off for a total of 15 days
for instance tomorow is the last day of my tour. so Thursday will be the start of my "6day" then I'll go back to work NEXT wed. Fri. Sun. Tues. Thurs. then 6 days off again!
and this can be changed to suit the Department.
it could be a 1/2 (work mon. get Tues wed. off, and go back Thurs. and this is also a TRUE 3 platoon schedule)
a 3/4 (work mon.wed. fri. get sat. sun. mon. tue. off) heres a calender of a 3/4 http://www.cherryhillfirefighters.co...alander(1).pdf
its a tough job....but someones gotta do it!

Congratulations and thank you for the work you do.
Decades ago, one of my uncles and family lived in another country which I won't name. If your house caught on fire, the fire dept. arrived, and you stood out in the street and handed them money until they thought it was worth going in... meanwhile everything you own was going up in flames. . . the things we take for granted living where we do!

Congratulations and best of luck!
My brother is retired FDNY. Unfortunately, he now suffers residual lung damage from his 9/11/01 search/recovery service.
