I think it was Elizabeth George's latest that plunked Tommy down in the middle of a surfing-related murder mystery on the northern coast of Cornwall.

Good choice, Jamie! I grew up at the beach and love the ocean -- although not in a first-person participatory sense. You are setting up some great memories for you and the rest of the family (even if they have to do with signing the cast ).

    Wetsuit? OK, my $.02...

I grew up in San Diego. Started surfing when I was 10. I've surfed practically every good spot (and some not so good ones) from Pismo Beach to Cabo San Lucas. Then I moved to Northern California. Problem: the water is too cold! It's "ice cream headache" cold. I hate it. So I stopped surfing. A wet suit is called a "wet suit" because the water gets in next to your skin, every time you go under--and it freezing. 60 degree water in the heat of the summer is a "warm" water day. No fun. So... unless you're very tolerant of the cold anything less than a full suit (that's full arms and legs plus booties and a hood) and you're going to freeze your butt off. I'd say stick with the kilt stuff and head south in the summer to get a taste of the ocean without a wet suit. A light, full arm and leg suit is OK in SoCal during the winter, but here in NorCal it's all or extreme discomfort all the year round.

Does it come to the top of the knee, or the trollopy and ever too long length of bottom of the knee?

    Standard,

    It comes to the knee

I was actually doing OK for the most part without a wetsuit but thought that something that kept my core warmer would be helpful (and less sun burned)

    Cheers

    A thought

It was very strange to go up to White Rock Canada this summer and go swimming

I'm Nor Cal / Bay Area born and raised so the idea of....warm ocean water? was a little weird!

    Cheers

Yes, a good wet suit can be quite invaluable for keeping your core warm. I used to do a bit of diving, and even a shorty like what you purchased did wonders for comfort. Hope you and your family enjoy your time at the beach.

As an avid surfer, boarder and scuba diver, let me just say that the shortie was an excellent decision.
