			Diameter of Dirk handle

For those of you who own one what is the diameter of the dirk handle top at its widest part - are the "hips" that meet the blade the same diameter - just flattened & shaped?

The grip on a dirk usually starts out as an approximately 2x2x6-inch block of wood which is turned, carved, and filed into the desired shape.
On most bandsman's dirks the shoulders are the same width as the grip and pommel. On civilian dirks the sizes will vary according to the design of the hilt. Generally speaking both the shoulders and the pommel will be about the same width/diameter, often with the grip being slightly smaller for aesthetic reasons.

Couple of pics that might help. This was given to me as a present. It is of Chinese manufacture and the most common type sold on eBay and in the shops in the UK.

The background is 1" graph paper.

Many different widths and shapes to fit the hand, fortcollinsjerry. For the best (and the most recent) example of perfect proportions, however, look to forum-member Rob Gordon's handle for The Gathering dirk presented to HRH in July: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/g...gathering+dirk

Yah - that Gordon handle is a work of art on its own merit. I could tel the first time I sws it that a very skiled artisan created it.

I'm curious how my handle will turn out?
