For full formal occasions where I would wear a PC, I have a pair of Ghillie brogues. For less formal events where an Argyle or Braemer would be more appropriate, I have a pair of cap toe Oxfords that I keep polished to a high shine.

I got mine on a good sale at HeritageofScotland (yes, the Gold Bros Store) online. Although they are a wee bit stiff uppers, the composite sole is nice and comfy and non slip. And very reasonably priced.

I've worn ghilie brogues (rental) in the past, but haven't thought of buying a pair.

I like buckled pumps for formal wear, but any black, classic shoe works. If I ever buy a pair of shoes especially for kilt wear, they will probably be glenfinnans. Or something like this, where the buckle can be replaced with a less ornate one.

I have gillie brogues but rarely wear them. For daywear it is ordinary brogues (wingtips) and for formal events it is buckle brogues. So saying I have nothing against gillie brogues as they are a distincively Scottish shoe.

I like them myself but would be, and was, reluctant to pay regular list for them. However I got an excellent deal on a pair of X-rental Ghillies at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville ON and wear them to complete the formal/semiformal outfit at events such as weddings and funerals, Burns Night etc- but not at Games or other functions which involve a lot of standing or walking. I prefer to favour my feet over my vanity.

Agree. I like ghillie brogues, will defend them, but I don't wear them. I prefer wingtips.

Since I put on a vibram sole for marching in parades, I find mine very comfortable indeed.

Never had gillie brogues. When formal I wear regular brogues. I have black and brown, both made by Dr. Marten. Had them for years.

    Confused

I guess I don't know my shoes. I have not got a clue to any of the vocab used here. Wingtips, brogues (without the ghillie), buckle brogues, etc. Mabey someone could explain it.

I wear a pair of black dress shoes, with no laces. Bought them at payless for 25 dollars. Not the best shoes, but they work for when I need it.
