Guitar choices – Reminds me of Kilts & Accesories

When I’m not here I’m often on a guitar web forum.

Just for solid wood (non-laminated) traditional acoustic guitars, there are six sizes, three or four wood choices for the back and sides, and one of four wood choices for the soundboard.

There are two widths of fingerboard, and two choices in headstock.

There are two types of wood finish, two methods of neck-joining, and three interior (under-the-soundboard) bracing schemes.

There at least three styles of finish color and also of inlay decoration.

Materials and craftsmanship domestic or import.

Ready made or custom made.

Cross multiply those choices out and let’s see…

Very many.

And of course each combination of choices has (mild or fierce) advocates and opponents -- for “worthiness” of tone, for value, and for utility.
Oh yes and for attractiveness and for appropriateness and for “tradition”.

Cross multiply that out and… Well, you get the idea.

I suppose that for any kind of recreational gear it’s more or less the same.

The good news: A Golden Age for choice.

The bad news: Not so much for consensus.

On the (mostly) distaff side there is the knitting machine debate - it's complexities are too great to even begin to explain - there are people with ten or more of them, just to cover the first set of variables.

Then there are the accessories...

Don't forget all of the electric guitar choices: single-coil or humbucker pickups, bolt-on or set neck, rosewood or maple fretboard, jumbo or vintage frets, mahogany or basswood or many other body woods, etc.

And then there's the guitar amplifier issues: tube (yes) vs solid state (no), EL34 vs 6L6 vs 6v6 tubes, digital vs analog effects (if any), etc.

It never ends.

There is never enough stash... Ask any quilter. If you want choices with lots of heated discussion, the Great Highland Bagpipe is full of these options. The heat starts with the Practice Chanter, and never stops.

About the guitar stuff (aka, G.A.S.--guitar acquisition syndrome)... Yep, it never ends. I've got a lot of gear, but at least I get "paid" for playing music in public.

Kilts... lot of choices, but they are a much less expensive addiction. I play kilted, but I've yet to get a bill tucked into my belt during a set. Only a matter of time I reckon...
