I like Generations and Soodlums. Maybe because they're so cheap and I'll never be good enough to need anything else.

Glad to see this thread, helps to give me some direction. I have a Clark in C -- toyed around w/ it here and there but haven't put the time to it. I'd like to learn, particularly w/ getting my hands on a low-D -- tho I understand those are costy. I'd also like to learn ulliean pipes -- I have a 1/2 set on indefinite loan, but need a new chanter reed for them to work -- also no time right now to put to learning. This past summer I saw the ulliean pipe equivalent of a practice chanter -- lung-blown, and essentially just the chanter, wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those as I could fiddle with it here & there as I do with getting additional time with my practice chanter (eg at bus stops).

A low D might not have to be expensive. Mind, I haven't done this yet, but here is a link to a DIY low whistle.

A person might be able to make one good enough to determine whether they wish to put the money into a good one.

Glad to see there are a bunch of whistle players here! I LOVE the sound. We have a very good whistler in our band and my wife goes at it now and again. I really should give it a serious go one day (I toy around with one when the mood strikes), but the guitar is enough work for a lifetime.

Interesting -- thanks Dan.
If I'm not feeling quite so inspired, I know the perfect young mad scientist locally I could inspire to take on making this. Before he could afford his own set of Highland pipes, he made his own smallpipes ... crafting the reeds by hand and the pipes via Home Depot. If he really applies himself, James Bond might have to take him down some day before he conquers the world.

DUDE! He should do an EHow page on that one. I'd like to try my hands at that just for kicks.

Here's another DIY whistle scheme from a local piper, Dennis Havlena.http://dennishavlena.com/low-d.htm
Dennis has all kinds of DIY instruments and other doo-dads on his webpage. You should check it out.
