I'm not at all sure how to characterize the novels of S.M. Stirling. You could call them "alternative history" or "apocalyptic fiction" or "epic fantasy." The truth is that they don't fit neatly into a category. They are, however a fascinating read.

The reason that I'm posting here though is that the kilt actually plays a big part with one of the factions in the novels. Without giving tooo much away, it seems that reinventing the Scottish clan is a pretty good way for you and your neighbors to survive the end of the world as we know it!

Start with Dies the Fire. It'll get you going. Anyway, if I've tweaked your interest at all, PM me for the other titles.

They've become a guilty pleasure if mine. I still think the premis must have started with "How could the SCA possibly become a world power?" Nevertheless, it is a fun read. It lead me to the Nantucket series, which was almost as much fun.

I haven't read Peshawar yet, but Conquistador is on my "To Do" list. Still need to finish Sword of the Lady

Speaking of the Nantucket books, have you noticed the same families popping up in both series?

Absolutely fantastic series! I started with "Dies the Fire" and recently read the Nantucket series (though I didn't like it nearly as much). I was excited to see the characters in the latest series finally get out to the East Coast, though my home in CT would certainly be in a Dead Zone...

Some good books, the SCA stuff is pretty funny, but I still liked the Nantucket series a little more.

There is another great Sci-Fi novel were surviving Scottish clans help overthrow the earth's alien overlords, but I don't want to drag this thread off topic...

Doubly fascinating to me, because I grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. I know that area like the back of my hand. Most of the time I read a fight scene I have to visualize. When I read his book, I knew which trees they were hiding behind.

The bar where the characters are when it starts? I used to drink in it. The hardware store where she gets the axe? Bought one there.

Strangely enough, it's not a bad place to be when the world is changing.

Hint... I believe he's referring to one of the thickest Sci-Fi novels of the last century... made into one of the worst Sci-Fi films of the last century, written my a man who started his own religion, which is now banned in several European countries.
