Well, don't discount the book because of the bad movie, good books are made into crap movies every day! And he was a great SF writer before started his own church. But it is indeed a hefty sized novel!

The bar where the characters are when it starts? I used to drink in it. The hardware store where she gets the axe? Bought one there.
Strangely enough, it's not a bad place to be when the world is changing.
That is a really cool perspective on a novel! So....where precisely is Dun Juniper?

The book series being discussed is the "Emberverse" series, it can be read on it's own, but is an offshoot of the earlier "Nantucket trilogy" where the world is cast into the bronze age.

Having had Timseh mention "one of the worst Sci-Fi films of the last century," in reply to a tease from Zardoz seems....strangely appropriate.

If no one is willing to come out and give the title, can someone at least PM me with the info? I've got a guess on the author, but I'm not sure....

Battlefield Earth, by L. Ron Hubbard. It is a very good book if you can manage to slog through a couple of slow spots, but it will probably take you some time.
