I have read (and reread) Magnus Magnusson's history of Scotland and find it extremely thorough on the subjects I have endeavored to research myself. It is a tome, and a somewhat difficult read, if only becasue of constant referencing to details in long preceding chapters which may no longer be readily in one's mind. But with a look back, and a reread occasionally it is very informative and to the best of my opinion very unopinionated. A great reference for a tumultuous and long period of Scotland's history. Recommended.
