Just made my first X-Kilt

Well okay, I took the basic idea/design/concept of the X-Kilt, but sort of just winged it when I actually went to make it.. so who knows how close it is to a properly designed X-Kilt.

I did learn a few things though, and made quite a few mistakes. First off, dont buy the $2 /yard poly/cotton blend from walmart, that's what I made it out of, figured for a trial run it wouldn't work out to bad, but its really thin, and if there is light behind it.. you can see straight through, even 2-3 layers of the material, not what I consider ideal for public wear. Also I figured out a few things, first I really need to figure out how to measure better, because my over apron and under apron, don't fully sit over-top of each other.

But for a trail run, it was not a bad go, I will probably work on some changes to how I do it on the next run after I find better materials. I am designing it to be worn with my football jersey's to show team support, I plan on adding a Dallas Cowboys Star patch to the over apron, at least on the next run of making it.

just found out my 'hip' measurement was an inch off.. and somehow that make.. ended up being 1.5" shorter then what i needed, the waste is basically right on at 42", but the hips at 43.5" and i need a 45". Its amazing how much 1.5" causes problems, so my suggestion for this, measure twice, and dont make the same mistake I did, lol.

Just a minor suggestion: Read over the X-kilt's instructions for A-shaping. It doesn't take but a few extra minutes to do, but makes the front apron hang better and with a narrow apron like that, I think it would improve the overall appearance.

Other than that it looks good and I agree, heavier material will make the final product a lot better. A star on the front is gonna be cool.

Yeah, I really only read it over quickly the first time, but thats also how I managed to make my first kilt. I learned some mistakes on that one too, and then did a bit more research before I made the second one, and took a lot more time to make it. Used it to try and figure out knife please on my first kilt, used this one primarily to figure out box pleats and how to taper the waist. I use the first shot to try it out and see how it goes, its not bad, it only cost me about $12 ($2 /yard for 4 yards of material & 1 spool of thread) I will be looking for a heavier weight material tomorrow from a real fabric store instead of walmart, lol.

I think kilts and football go great together! I bought my Gordon kilt specifically to go with my Green Bay gear...

Awesome, thats actually what sparked my interest into kilts is football, I was wearing a football jersey to a Ren Fest, and from that point on I decided I wanted a kilt to wear with my Jersey's.

I am working on a much better Modern Kilt right now, Going to try to do pleat inserts with a light material with 'cowboys' and the logo on it... im trying to step it up a bit.

I want a Ramsay Blue kilt to go with the Jersey's as well, but I can't find the material in my price range right now, so that will have to wait.

Good stuff. Yeah I think Miz Squeaky is right, a bit of A shaping would do wonders for that over-apron. But hey, you LEARNED stuff, right? Carry on, mate!
