In the USAF, they get base pay, housing allowance (unless you live on post), a sustinance allowance which is about $300-400 a month for a family of three, seperation pay, hazard pay, and a list of other allowances you may or may not be eligable for and I can't begin to remember what they all are. And you are all assuming that I wouldn't be working? Bah. Pfft. This is the longest I have been without a job in about 10 years and it's been this long only because this is how long it took for my daughter to get settled in and comfortable with her new home. I'll be starting my new job as a restaraunt manager within the next week. Anyways, back on track. With the base pay and allowances and the income that I bring in, wherever I may be working when he gets a "permanant" station, I think we'll be pretty okay.

Good. Sounds like you ARE doing your homework. I didn't mean to offend but the pictures painted in this thread were just too rosy and didn't seem to offer the downsides of it.

Your family is very proud of it's military traditions.

Deployment to the conflict in Southeast Asia ended a relationship for me. She was not interested in waiting for me to possibly come home alive. The "Dear John" letter was waiting for my return from my first real mission. Married Mr Jack Daniels for a week, then divorced him and went on to fight the real war.
The Air Force treated me real well, and on various TDY assignments was treated well by the Marines, Army, Royal Air Force and the US Navy.
I hope when MM3 Bishop has his first tour aboard ship he can report improvement in the reputation of Navy coffee. During my time it was brewed in a large batch before departing and kept on continuous boil for the whole tour. It had the reputation of being able dissolve rust at the sea line in 30 seconds or less.
I have several married friends that are currently serving in the Navy, and Air Force. The reports are that the families are being treated fairly well and COLA has been reasonable on all their duty assignments.

During my service in the Navy the freshness of any given pot of coffee was directly influenced by the availabity of non rated men on that watch. If they were available a pot of coffee became "stale and undrinkable" after 15 min. if a senior petty officer (E-6 or above) would have to make coffee himself a pot was good untill empty or the watch was over which ever came second.
