Pockets or not?

I have two contemporary kilts that I made and neither have pockets. However, I have made an X-Kilt with an under-apron pocket. I just haven't continued with that because it tends to show a bit of a bulge in a delicate place and I don't want to spoil all the womens days when things turn out to not be as advertised.

I included cargo pockets, a la Utilikilts (kind of) in the X Kilt instructions, and I've made two X-Kilts with those pockets. I also think that Farlander did a bang-up job with his modified cargo pockets on his X-kilt, but I dunno, they're just not for me.

Now, slit pockets like how Steve at Freedom Kilts does 'em....That, maybe, I could get into.

So...pockets in your kilt, or not?

I have two kilts (both camo) with front pockets. One FK and one RKilts custom job. I love the fact that I can slip things in there, cigs, lighter, wallet change, cell phone. Not too bulky items are hidden by my slight beer gut (read Molson Muscle) and helps with a surprising amount of room. It also freaks people out when it seems that I produce something out of thin air. If I had my way all my kilts would have these, so much easier than fumbling around in a sporran. I was concerned that standing around with my hands in my pockets might stretch the canvas but a couple of years of standing around casualy this hasn't happened. Such is Steve's design and quality.

I've made cargo pockets several times, but they never looked good enough to actually attach to one of my kilts. I intend to try again. On my hiking kilts, I think low-slung side-mounted cargo pockets would be great, and out of the way of my pack belt.

I don't wear contemporary/utility style kilts but if I ever do I will forgo the pockets. I still favor the sporran with a kilt no matter what type of kilt it is. In fact, I think a sporran with a utility style kilt is a good way to help link it with the traditional kilt.

I have a kilt from our resident Wizard and the slit pockets are absolutely brilliant, invisible, and super handy. I'm sorry all my kilts don't have 'em.

I vote for slit pockets, and if I don't have those I prefer a waist pack to a sporran, even though I confess the latter looks better than the former. I've never been into cargo pockets on trousers, so I'm not especially keen on the idea of a cargo kilt, and don't own one, but I'd sooner have pockets than not.

Absolutely; I prefer the slit pockets, but flap pockets are an acceptable alternative. I've worn a sporran, but they keep tapping me in all the wrong areas when I walk, so I'd rather have pockets any day.

I've gotten to the age in which I don't put much in my trouser pockets because of the lack of comfort, so I'm less likely to want pockets in my kilt.

I've been making modern kilts, with slit pockets, thats my vote, I have tried the under apron pocket and cargo pockets, and I really do not like how either look or are used with the kilt.
These are pictures of the two I have made, I need to make them bigger but the two I have made are big enough for a cell phone or a money clip, which is all I really need when I am walking around in my kilt.

I'm firmly in the pro-pocket camp. i don't like cargo pockets, not at all. Not only are they ugly, but they're not very useful. If you put anything heavy in them, they tend to pull down. Useful pockets need to placed properly, and have good attachment to the waistband.
