This is not what I expected!

A couple of days ago I walked into one of our photo studios and was met with very positive words from one young lady there. Nothing new in that. But then she said she would never wear a skirt because she was too shy to wear one. I can't help but wonder at that! Have things changed that much? Is there a whole generation of young women out there who are too shy, or unsure of themselves to wear a skirt? I felt sorry for her as she appeared to be a lovely young woman and came across as confident.

Kiltman, Although the reasons may vary, I too have run into this.

I have a lady friend who (until she met me) rarely wore a skirt. Her reasons were that it was too troublesome to have to find (and put on) nylons or tights and find shoes that matched. However when she started seeing me wearing different kilts, and with a variety of different hose (and even no hose + sandals with my UK Original in the summer), she realized that skirts too could be worn simply, and without fuss.

I see her wearing skirts much more often now (without nylons and with sensible shoes) lol.

I attribute it to the "grass is always greener" effect. Last time I flew, a flight attendant asked me "why the kilt?" I said it was very comfortable while traveling. She confirmed that this is something that women have known for years... What probably ends up happening is the inverse to what happens when a man starts wearing kilts. A woman puts on pants and says, "Hey. This is pretty comfortable. I like the way these pants feel... And it's far less trouble and more practical than a skirt."

Anyway, that's just my own personal guess on the matter.

I find that extremely ironic, considering the reason men resisted women wearing pants is because it was too revealing. I mean, when wearing pants, you can see the shape of a woman's rear end, the curve of her legs, etc.! A skirt (well, a proper dress) is actually a more modest garment than pants.

While that is true, wearing a skirt is outside the norm (sadly). It is hard for a shy person to be purposely and visibly outside the norm.

Interesting. I'm guessing that this is mainly an urban phenomenon? Or possibly a geographical one. Down here in the deep South, especially in rural areas like where I live, I'd say it's still about 50:50. I usually see about half the women wearing pants and half wearing skirts of various lengths. And when it comes to dressing nicely (I suppose what you'd call 'day wear' or better), most women here still go with a skirt. But we're still traditionalists down here.

I know many women who don't own a skirt. One of my favorite replies when a woman asks me why I wear a kilt is, "If I wore trousers, people might think I was a woman!"

My wife prefers to wear dresses, for which I am very thankful.

When we lived in San Jose, most of her friends considered dresses to be more trouble than they were worth. Although when they would complain about their husbands not paying attention to them, my wife's answer was always short and to the point. She would tell them dresses and stockings, worth the trouble.

It's been over three decades together. I'm sure glad she thought I was worth it.

Exactly. I have always thought this. I told a woman this who always wore pants and she had no idea. Once I explained it she understood and did include more skirts into her wardrobe.
