Ah yes... how silly of me.

...hah, but seriously, certainly there is a real reason that we never hear of kilted men being held at gunpoint, or otherwise ill-used.

Looking tough surely has something to do with stature, but appearing... tight, angry, or mean is sometimes a byproduct of a lack of self confidence or anticipation of other's judgement of what you're wearing. I'm not a small guy myself, but let's face it; big does not always equal bad. I've learned that the more I loosen up, the more confident I feel, the easier people are around me. When I feel at ease and loosened up, I don't think people feel intimidated or afraid of me. Just my two pesos. Nothing more.

Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

I think it's the cultural reputation. At least since Hadrian decided that the best way to deal with the Picts was to shut them out, most of the world (except the English, whose pride and greed were not bounded) has seen little benefit in mixing it up with Scots.

    Wearing the Kilt

I get some but not too many offensive comments any more. The towns people in my small town in Michigan are used to me wearing them now.

So do I---my father's mother's family was English and are the earliest immigrants in my line, having been established in Massachusetts before 1820. And yes it is harsh, though it's baby-lotion mild compared to the English treatment of the Cornish, the Welsh, the Scots, and the Irish. Whatever else they may be or have been, they have not been good neighbors.

There are persuasive reasons that such a large fraction of our immigrants have come from the "British" Isles.
