Well it Finally Happened to me
My first kilt check happened this weekend when I went up to Guernville, CA for a relaxing weekend and to see the Parade of Lights that goes down their one main street.
I was standing there with a friend cheering on the various floats, wearing my heaviest of kilts and (thankfully) a white pair of insulated underwear, amung various other layers. We stood near an older drunken couple who we met thanks to the conversational piece wrapped around my waist. She asked about my "plaid skirt" and he corrected her with a wink to me that I was wearing a kilt. He was Irish and apparently knew these things. So we all hung out together for the parade. Before we parted ways, however, at the end of the parade, she looked at my friend (a woman), and grabbed the bottom of my kilt and up it went!
Thank God for long johns!
Once the kilt was down, her husband reprimanded her with 'that was very rude!" and I laughed it off. Her response was "I had to... I always wanted to do that and now I can say I have."
Slightly mortifying considering the whole town was out and about with lots of kids running around, nevermind it was in the low 30s....

Well, at least you were wearing the thermal underwear, Noah.
And you dealt with the whole thing with good grace!

I agree, well handled and good fortune that you were covered underneath.
While you laughed it off, you should keep in mind that since you were out in a public place (you point out that children were running around), her exposing you that way could have led to legal action being taken against you by the police. In some towns, it wouldn't matter if someone else caused it, you can be charged with having exposed yourself.

Aren't you a killjoy, Galician. And these statutes are found in what jurisdictions?

I wouldn't know the particulars of the laws in each and every town in the country. But in following kilting, I have become aware of cases in different states where men were hassled by the police. It all depends on what the local laws are.
I think it's worth keeping in mind when someone wants to do a kilt check on the street, as opposed to having it happen in the relative privacy (and adult setting) of a bar.

Sounds like you handled it well. What was your friend's reaction?

My friend couldn't stop laughing. I was kilted all day and received a lot of positive comments from everyone, so we had talked about kilts a bit and how it seems (via XMTS) that older women seem to be the most brazen when it comes to kilt checks... so as we walked away she made the comment "no wonder you like 'older' women!"
It's good to know about the laws though in this particular town, it's a very eclectic group of folks ranging from as one resident told us "hicks to hippies with our fair-share of gays." So basically - pretty much anything goes there, though she claimed that Guernville has the highest population of kilt-wearers in the US... Somehow, I highly doubt that considering the population size!

I have never been "kilt checked," but I figure it will happen one day!

Well it is bound to happen sorry to say, but a lot can be said in decorum by how well it is handled, and you did well.

Come on over to Flagstaff, Arizona. Cops there won't hassle you.
