I don't think they are a bad idea, but just make sure they don't offer unsightly buldges, as you said. I love the way a kilt lays and anything that ruins it is a no-no!

I wear contemporary kilts at (camping) music festivals.
My small items can be carried in a two-pocket shirt or at most a sporran or waist pack.
I have several AmeriKilt’s (back pocket) and SportKilts (apron pocket) and have rarely used the pockets.
Sportkilt also do slit pockets and even cargo pockets on tartan kilts. I have a SportKilt with slit pockets, and am thinking of getting another. They don't seem to provide the stash pocket inside the apron if you order one with any other pockets.
Amerikilt always turn up with a stand at all the festivals I go to. They do a very nice looking dark green kilt (and at festivals they seem to have bright RED kilts that aren't on their website), but I've never liked back pockets on trousers (that is, many of my trousers have a back pocket or two, but I almost never put anything in them) so I can't really imagine using the back pocket on an Amerikilt. That just leaves you with the 'cloth sporran' thingy that fits on the front with press-studs. What do you think of the 'cloth sporran'?

The only pocketed kilts I have bought have been Sport Kilts with the stash pocket; in fact I added the stash pocket to the one SK I had that didn't come with one. I did add a small slit pocket to one of my Xkilts the other day, appropriate for a small key chain or money clip, it may or may not stay installed.
I don't like the look of a cloth clip on sporran, but I might try cargo pockets with clips and d rings on the kilt for outdoor pursuits. I'm one of those that likes a sporran with my contemporaries.

Pockets or not
I have a very heavy leather Union kilt with lots of pockets, very useful. But I must say a kilt with no pockets hangs well, you can always wear a sporran if you like wearing one. Think there are argument for or without.

I thought we answered this question years ago Alan, still not decided? Anyway, I think that for contemporary/solid color kilts, pockets are great. I own both types, and sometimes, the difficult choice of what kilt to wear comes down to whether I want to throw a sporran on or not. If not, my UK witht he cargo and rear pocket are the way to go. I like the slit pockets in my UK Mocker as well, but they are DEEP! It can look a bit strange if you have to retrieve that last dime in the very bottom of the pocket. People might wonder if you are searching for change or playing pocket pool!

My PK MarPat is my kilt of choice recently. It has side slash pockets and one under the apron. For me this is the perfect configuration. Easy access, plenty of storage for short or long term. Hanging a ceiling fan and need somewhere to stash a screw or driver? right in the under apron is perfect. Running to the store and don't want to put on a belt or sporran? through the phone in one pocket, wallet in the other and whatever else in the under apron.
I simply don't like the hanging cargo pockets on the out side of the kilt. I didn't like them on my UK Survival but at least they were removable.

If you order the Sportkilt with the slit pockets, don't order the leather kilt straps. They get in the way of the right hand pocket, and are really for show only (it's the velcro that holds your kilt on)

Sorry about that. PK is Pittsburgh Kilts (no longer doing business but not because the kilts weren't great). MarPat is Digital Marine Pattern Camo

Well, I don't have a kilt from our resident Wizard but I do have some with pockets, patch and slit. I think they're wonderful when not overused (read, too full).
