    Wondering if this is Traditional...

Does anyone have an opinion on CHARCOAL TWEED Prince Charlie jackets? The seller describes them as both tweed and barathea. My assumption is this is not a heavy handwoven tweed.

IMHO, it is an awkward hybrid, especially with silver buttons... What say the better informed?

Personal view - this would look great in an argyll but is too casual a fabric for a PC.

Notice the model is wearing a Prince Charlie, with a 5 button waistcoat, a ruche tie, and a belt yet no sporran. I'd say the appearance is hardly traditional, it looks to me like a modern variant. Over the past few years I've noticed some companies trying the PC with the 5 button normally associated with an argyll jacket as a way to get the younger generation involved. This charcoal tweed Prince Charlie seems to be an extension of the same.

The web site recommends the jacket and five button vest for "formal day wear," whatever that is. I think the fabric would be better for an Argyll jacket for day wear. I don't think the PC lends itself well to being dressed down.

One thing for certain a PC worn during the day, is most definitely not traditional. The barathea(black usually), silver buttoned argyll is the traditional formal day wear jacket.

The fabric in the pictures does not look like tweed. It looks like a worsted wool in a charcoal color.

Personally, I don't think I like it in the Prince Charlie. But there is no objective reason why you can't have a Prince Charlie made from any color you like. I've seen them in bottle green and navy blue, white, red, etc. But the "classic" is, of course, black.

However, I think the right person, with the right outfit, could make it work. I can see this being worn with a predominantly grey tartan, like the Highland Granite from Lochcarron, or any of House of Edgar's Hebridean line.

I've seen plenty of these in just about every large kilt shop. They do look pretty good but I would describe them as contemporary and not traditional.

It strikes my eye as odd, too.

I've never been much of a fan of Prince Charlies in colours other than black.

At a kilt hire shop in Glasgow I saw a large photo of a model decked out in a white Prince Charlie, matching self-coloured/solid-colored white kilt, white fur sporran with white tassels, white shirt and tie, white hose and flashes...

Now, had the model been wearing white Ghillies they really would have had something, but alas. To come so close, but fall short, is sort of tragic.

Once again, I agree with Matt.

A few have commented that this fabric would look better in an Argyle. I agree, and it happens to be a rather popular seller of ours. If anyone is looking for an Argyle jacket in this same fabric...
