My first kilt purchased for $600 13 years ago, was a tank made in Scotland which was ordered through the Pipers Cove in Kearny NJ. Thanks to the expanding internet with more options out there with kiltmakers, I am very happy buying quality kilts at lower prices.

My first tank including flashes came in at about $570 US. The regimental weight Black Watch fabric that I just sent to Mrs. Tewksbury will cost me around $475 by the time it is delivered to me including my cost of the fabric.

I checked the "£200-349 ($320-549)" line, but I sort of have a mental limit of about $450 USD.

What tartan is your new kilt and why, if you don't mind me asking, does it have such significance?
BTW, my one and only kilt was around the £350 mark. The complete outfit just nipped at the £1,000 mark. I'd think much more than that would be profiteering.

Not a kilt for me, but a kilt-like object. I would like a box-pleated kilted skirt, with deep pleats, and opening on the left-- otherwise, not unlike a gent's kilt, 13 oz. I think that would be about $350 from one of our skilled box-pleaters, and it would make me very happy.
My costliest kilt-like object is my MacAlpine modern skirt of 10 oz worsted (Lochcarron). It was about $200, I think. I adore it. My only complaint is -- you guessed it -- shallow pleats of doom!
I occasionally find good deals on Ebay for such things. I have enough now (12) and am declaring a moratorium. I only want tartans that have some meaning (however tangential) to me personally or family-wise.

Hi Brue.
It's the Scottish National Party tartan. At the moment I feel it just has to be my next kilt as it's something I feel a strong connection to - even more so than several bloodlines of grandparents and various towns and cities that I will eventually get round to having kilts made to honor.
I've been meaning to get this into a kilt as soon as it came out - but I decided to get a few made for a bit less before buying an SNP kilt.
I don't have a great deal of money as I'm a student - but I can certainly put down the deposit for it ![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

With my tongue placed firmly in my cheek. But with a serious point.
Should we discussing political parties here? I know we are talking tartans, but a tartan of a political party? I thought politics are an absolute no-no on this website. It would be a shame, if in future, this thread was to be used as a precedent by an undesirable political party. Sorry Paul, I don't mean to rain on your parade.

Jock makes an interesting observation that I thought I should respond to.
Mention of a tartan (as Paul did) that is specific to a political party is acceptable, just as any discussion of a religious tartan (e.g. the recent thread on Jewish tartans) or any other corporate tartan is OK. The line is crossed when the discussion moves from the tartan itself to the specifics of a particular political or religious view.
Keep the thread on the cost of kilts and we will not have any problem.

Just FYI, Lochcarron also makes a product they call a "lady's semi-kilt" which is essentially the same item as their standard kilt skirt, but made with extra cloth for deeper pleats. This might be just what you are looking for.
We sell them, as should any Lochcarron retailor.

My most expensive is the kilt made of a tartan I designed. Just getting the ten yards single-width heavy tartan was around $500 with import duties etc.
The kiltmaker, Madelyn Blandford, who has most sadly passed away, only charged me $150 for the making. She was a wonderful woman and great kiltmaker and many examples of her fine work are to be seen any most any local kilted gathering.
Anyhow that kilt is a true "tank" having 9 yards of heavyweight tartan in it. Weighs a ton.
A few years ago when I was shopping around for somebody to make me a Cameron Highlanders kilt (heavyweight Erracht Cameron tartan, eight yards, boxpleated to the yellow line, green military binding, military style buckles) a kiltmaker on the Isle of Skye quoted me 700 pounds.
