Xmarks variants?

The "Ponderings Of An Ancient Scot" thread and its theme of folks taking up newer tartans in place of the clan tartans got me thinking.

As, at least, an academic exercise, what would an "Ancient Xmarks", a "Hunting Xmarks" and an "Ancient Hunting Xmarks" tartan look like?

I lean toward those muted and toned down tartans in lieu of the brighter modern versions. There is an Illinois (actually Illinois St. Andrew's Society) tartan, for example, but it's rather bright and wouldn't be my first choice...but maybe an Illinois Hunting or Ancient would be more to my personal taste.

Any of you tartan designers ever thought about variants on the Xmarks?

I rather like the muted - it combines the X marks set, which I find very pleasant on the eye, and Air Force blue, a nod to my dad's military service.

Oh yes - I keep going back for another look, it is really very attractive.

Perhaps since Matt Newsome is the designer of the Xmarks tartan, shouldn't someone ask him regarding possible variations of it?

Those are two fine looking tartans, HE came up with. For me, you can't beat the original. But keep on trying.

Remember folks that ancient, modern, reproduction, weathered, muted, all are terms that refer to color palettes. I would consider the X Marks tartan as it has typically been woven to be the "modern" (aka standard) colors. If someone wanted to have a length run in ancient or weathered colors, for example, all they would have to do would be to change the color palette to lighten the tones. It would not require a new tartan design.

On the other hand, terms like hunting and dress refer to different tartans entirely. They could be color changes based on the original tartan (substituting colors, for example) or they could be entirely different and unrelated designs.

If the owner of the forum wants me to work on designing a hunting or dress version of the X Marks tartan, I'd be more than happy to do so, but it would be his call.
