House of Cheviot/Hawick tartan top hose review and new vendor Redshank
Through some other postings and PMs about various threads I came to get to know the forum regular known as Redshank, whose real name is Chris. We were discussing some tartan top hose I had found on Ebay when Chris told me that he was the ebay vendor for those auctions, and that he was hoping to be able to sell the same or similar hose to forum members at even better prices than on ebay, since he could discount them more because he did not have to pay ebay fees. He pointed me toward his new website, http://dunaddtradingcompany.co.uk/default.aspx , where I found listed all four of Hawick Hose/House of Cheviot tartan top hose in Ancient Scot, Royal Scot, Hunting Scot, and National Scot, at better prices than I had found anywhere else on the internet, with free shipping, even to the states. So I bought a pair of the Ancient Scot to wear with my Ancient MacDonald and Ancient Douglas kilts. They came a couple days ago and I love them. They are nicely colored but not overwhelming, match nicely to the ancient colors of my kilts, are substantially well built, comfortable, all wool and in my opinion very attractive. I know others on the forum have similar hose in the other colors who have similar opinions. What amazed me was Chris's prices which as I said include shipping, and his quick and easy ordering system and rapid order turnaround time. I got mine from Scotland in under a week, as he put them in the shippers hand the very next day after I ordered. Chris has been very easy to deal with and I have no reservations about ordering more from him. As a matter of fact I already have, as Chris has access to many of the Hawick/House of Cheviot varieties.
HoC Ancient Scot tartan tops with lovat green bodies and ancient blue/lovat green tops and black over checks, front view.
Rear view.
For those who have not tried them House of Cheviot/Hawick Hose are very high quality and very substantial, probably the best mass produced kilt hose and shooting socks made in the UK, right in the Borderlands. And they have great variety in colors and fancy tops among their many other styles.
If you are in the market for some nice hose at great prices check out Chris's website, or PM him at his forum name Redshank. I know I will keep an eye on his website in anticipation of him adding more varieties of these great hose to his stock list.

I could not agree more, I ordered three pair of the Argyll Tops and a pair of Saltire tops from Chris some time ago, they are bar none my favourite hose. I wear them quite a bit and have had nothing but compliments about the look. The other consideration is that the House of Chevot Hawick Hose are as you say the most comfortable mass produced hose on the market. Chris was easy to deal with, we ended up talking on the phone for quite some time, and I do have a standing invitation to tour his wee part of Scotland when I get over. I would recommend him and his hose to any and all, and wish Chris all the best with his new venture.

Sweet Jeff!
I noticed over the weekend in Redshank's signature, The Dunadd Trading Company. Clicking on I found Chris's offering of House of Cheviot Argyll top hose at an unbelievealbe price. The exchange rate put the hose at 50 US$. Chris has priced his hose to include shipping worldwide. That's an extraordinary deal! I instantly knew that I wanted a pair of the Royal and Ancient Scot. Then I succumbed to the excellent price and order all four. Chris mailed them on Monday, so the Jones has begun.

It is nice to read such great reviews of the local Hawick product.
Redshank has been retailing these hose for two or three years now, he was already doing so at the time I posted this photothread about my visit to the factory of House of Cheviot /Hawick Sock Company.

I live a short walk from the factory. Robin Deas who runs the factory only does wholesale. He very generously gave me a pair of House of Cheviot hose in return for the publicity I have given his company on forums such as this, but ironically when I want to buy another pair I need to visit my local kilt shop proprietor in town and then he sends the order through to Robin.

Your jones should not be long lived if you get yours in the same timely fashion I got mine.
Interestingly, going through my kilt hose "box" I remembered picking up two other pairs of these hose while in Scotland two years ago, they were on clearence at Edinburgh Woollen Mills Royal Mile shop (National and Hunting Scot---Black and navy bodies respectively). But since at that time they did not match any of my kilts they had been slowly relegated to the bottom of the pile and never worn. With several new kilts in the past few months, and a couple more on the way I will have to get them out and start matching them up with my kilts now.
Can't wait for my Mustard Bowmores to arrive and see how well they match up with my Ancient Caledonia Kingussie kilt from Keltoi that should be rising to the top of his queue any day now, as well as matching my own family tartans. If I didn't already have HoC fancy top hose in red and in loden I would have clicked my way to happiness by ordering those Bowmores as well.

These House of Cheviot Argyll top hose have become my favorites! Today, I wore my Hunting Scott (Navy blue) pair. And as you can see I had quite a flock of admirers!
The bonnet is a Black Watch one, which was a special order by Chris from Robert Mackie. The jacket was an off the rack purchase at Hector Russell when I was in Glasgow this summer. The kilt is a Burnett’s & Struth casual in the Malcolm modern tartan. The belt from Cavscout at Oconee Leather Works. The XMarks Clan badge and buckle is from Steve at Freedom kilt. I really love this display of our clan badge in the buckle. My favorite sporran which was made by Turpin, Thorfinn #80. Sporran strap from Scottish Tartans Museum. The self tie garters are also from STM. Now a close up of those great hose for Dunadd Trading Company.
And finally a word of thanks to Riverkilt in introducing me to the Sportsman Friend. Those monk strap leather Hushpuppies were only $35!

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of ordering a pair of the Ancient Scot hose to go with my Mackay ancient kilt. Your review just decided the matter for me. Thanks!

Watch out Mael. That fellow behind you looks like he is already in the process of performing a sneak attack kilt check, that could turn into a "goose" of another variety.
Glad to hear you enjoy your hose and Balmoral, and that you had as good an experience working with Chris as I did. You look grand, by the way.
