The pipers' unforms weren't uniform.

They weren't in uniform. They have great uniforms, but they don't require them for Burns Night. But yes, the level of formality is greatly misunderstood by everyone. Some think it ought to be black tie, where some think it should be casual... just too much confusion I think.
