Kilted on St. Paddy's Day??

Even with an Ireland's National and saffron kilts its gonna be real hard not to wear my new green leather RKilt...which I'm trying not to think about until it arrives...soon....very soon...

No shortage of kilts IN the Chicago parade...not a whole lot of people in the crowd wearing them but lots of fun when two kilties cross paths and acknowledge each other and the unkilted crowd around them looks on in admiration and awe. I have seen a young fella in the crowd with the St. Pat's tartan on and it is really nice. As you can see, if you want to peruse the photo collection attached to the parade home page, lots of kilts and a very diverse crowd...everybody here takes this holiday very seriously.

Sorry to Greg (beloitpiper) but the South Side Irish Parade has been cancelled due to bad behavior. There will be a week of local events in place of the parade. There is a group (reasonably large, I hear) that has promised to show up anyway and mob all of the establishments along the old parade route but I have a feeling that the Powers That Be aren't going to let that happen. Greg marched in those parades a couple of times but the crowd was so large that I could never get to the end of the parade route to meet up with him.

You know, when I heard that last year my heart just dropped. I have never met better people than the ones at the South Side parade. Every year, as we were lining up (in the rain and cold) waiting for the parade to start, the people who lived on the street invited us in to a huge meal and a warm living room. We played a few tunes, they gave us a few drinks, it was the best craic I've ever had. But now, because some people can't celebrate their heritage without getting poisoned drunk, there's no more parade. It sickens me. Auld Argonian, if I can find a place to stay down there I might come down for the festivities, even if there is no parade...just don't tell the Southies that I'm from Wisconsin!

At least there's the Madison and Milwaukee parades. I'll be wearing my kilt for those (saffron and green, respectively) events while I'm piping, but for the rest of the week when I'm not piping I'll just wear my Celtics FC shirt.

Sure I'll be kilted on St.Patrick's Day, and at our Parade on the 13th. Why should it be different from any other day?

For some people there is a very real religious significance to this date as well.
I have Irish relatives who have said up until recent history, this was particularly true in Ireland.

Since it a Wednesday, I will be going to work kilted. I doubt that I will be going to work at all Thursday though.

Sorry Jamie but I must modify your comment to read "ANY cooked cabbage is......errrr...unpleasant."

And I learned in my old biology and genetics classes that I have a genetic biochemical reason for disliking its taste, so I have an impenetrable defense for my disdain of all things cabbage, save cole slaw (uncooked and well drenched in special sauces).

According to my Bulter's, Saint Patrick was from "Bannavem Taberniae," which was near Dumbarton, but may have been in Cumberland. I'll go with Dumbarton; therefore, it would be a fine day to wear a kilt.

Actually, there have been quite a few St Patricks days over the years where I spent the day piping, but not in kilts: doing uilleann gigs.

One of these days I need to get an Irish-themed kilt.

So sorry to hear about that parade being cancelled... all because of some eejits...

This brings to mind a somewhat offtopic thing: what should an uilleann piper wear? Nowdays, and going back to our earliest images of uilleann pipers, most just wear the ordinary dress of the day.
But there did seem to be sort of an uilleann piping costume worn by some pipers, a "suit of the Irish cut" as it was called, with a swallowtailed coat and kneebreeches and sometimes buckled shoes as well.

Francis O'Neill, the great collector of Irish traditional music, in the early years of the 20th century, wrote deploringly of the adoption of kilts by Irish revivalists.
