Well, I've been in the same position as you have. I ended up just wearing it and not making a deal about it. if it helps here are some pictures of myself and my date as well as my friend and his date. I am in a blackwatch SWK Standard and he is in a USAKilt in the US Navy Tartan (originally he was going to try and wear it as his proper sea cadets uniform, lazy guy never got around to it though.)
