here's a question. when wearing a kilt with a jacket and tie, what collar shirt do you wear? button down or point collar? also if ya'll have pictures, let's see them.

Standard Point collar for me, I do not care for Button Down or Spread collars.

If it is a dress situation I wear a tux shirt and a bow tie. That I hand tie, not a clip on.

I certainly have worn both....as well as a standard tie and a bow tie. Both were white dress shirts and I do not think any thing particular to the collar would have made either stand out.

The short, flip answer is "yes".

Really, as with most kilt-related apparel, it's up to your personal preference. Some people feel the point collar is a little more formal than the button-down, but not as formal as the spread collar.

Hmmm. I prefer a button-down for more casual situations. In fact, unless I am wearing a four-in-hand tie, I only wear button-downs. and for fairly casual situations with a tie, I still wear button-donws. But . . .

if I am in a dressier situation requiring a tie and nicer jacket, I wear either a spread or standard point collar. Unless. . .

it is more of a black tie or formal sitation. In which case I would wear a bow tie--self-tied and never pre-tied--probably with a wing-collared shirt, complete with pleated front.

So, I guess the answer to your questin is, yep. I wear 'em all.

I am not a fan of button down collars as they are such a bind to put your tie on. So pointed collars for me, always.

I prefer a button-down if I am not wearing a tie, as they look neater with the top button undone; with a tie I prefer a spread collar, but I have some point collars as well.

I think everybody has pretty much answered the question, but I'll add my thoughts anyways.

I don't know that I own any button down collar shirts at the moment, as I tend to prefer point collar shirts with a tie and that's usually how I wear any dress shirt that I'm going to wear. As others have said, it's certainly okay to wear a tie with a button down collared shirt...just know that button down collars are considered less formal, so it would not be appropriate in all situations.

Eagle JCS nailed it....the answer is yes and it depends on preference and the occassion.

As far as formal attire goes, the tux hire business and bad 80s fashion have totally muddied the waters on shirt-tie combinations. Because I'm an Army officer, I became aware of the difference between a turn down collar shirt and a wing collar shirt by reading the regulations...and then found out much more about it on this website:

I've found this website to be a GREAT resource for anybody wishing to dress in Black or white tie and do so appropriately and with style!! I know that it is common here in the US to wear wing collared shirts with black tie, but traditional style (as well as my uniform regulations) dictate a turn down collar, pleated front shirt for black tie and reserves the wing collar, hard bosom (pique cotton, heavily starched) shirt for white tie only. Just wanted to share that...a good piece of general knowledge that is commonly violated here in the US.

How does that work??? Can that even exist??
Do you cut up the back and sew an elastic band??
Even if you could actually do it, I still prefer to self-tie mine.
