Kingussie Kilt
I'm am wondering if there is a MacDonald Tartan that better lends itself to Kingussie pleating than another? i.e. MacDonald of Glenaladale vs MacDonald vs MacDonald of Prince Edward Island. Do some setts pose problems for the kiltmaker?

Most of the Macdonald tartans look as though they would lend themselves easily to a Kingussie kilt.
Tartans with a smaller repetitive pattern are good so that the central box pleat can be made thinner without having serious overlap of the pleats underneath.
Macdonald tartans mostly have sections of many thin red stripes which can be substituted for each-other to some extent which actually would make them one of the more ideal tartans IMPHO.

Lady Chrystel is telling me it depends of many things.
Do you want pleated to the stripe or to the sett ?
Also please remember that the heavier the fabric, the larger the sett...

Since I am considering this on my next kilt, I would like to ask the same question. Sorry about hijacking the thread again, but what about the Ancient McKay in the PV?

Not Regimental Black Watch
I played with the regimental BW fabric trying to pin it up Kingussie style...not a chance that would work...not how I was trying to do it anyhow. 18oz fabric with an 11" sett repeat is just WAY too much fabric at the center.

For BW, just pleat half-setts...
Cordially,

Well It kinda depends. I think it's quite possible ancient Mackay will work out fine.

I've mentioned the so-called MacDonald of PEI elsewhere and the fact that I don't believe that there is/was any such tartan and that it's an error for Wilsons' Flora MacDonald. Whatever one calls it, it would not make a good Kingussie pleated kilt if one wanted the sett to repeat in a balanced way in either direction from the central pleat.
The Glenaladale on the other hand would be superb as would Clan Donald, Clanranald, Glengarry, Kingsburgh, Aird & Valley and host of other Macdonald setts.

I would like to add that since my last post, a very nice article came out in the Tartan Herald, the Scottish Tartans Authority's online magazine .
I would like to share it with you:
Lady Chrystel is the kind of kiltmaker that can get around practically any tartan related problem. You like a specific tartan ? She'll make it into a Kingussie kilt for you. Be at peace.
Best,
Robert
