These tartan sporran abominations first began appearing as women's "sporran style" purses, worn off the shoulder - nothing wrong with that, as women don't wear sporrans. But the whole idea of a tartan sporran with the kilt is somewhat akin to wearing a tartan tam o'shanter with Highland dress (which looks clownish). Stick with a nice brown leather sporran for daywear, and a silver-mounted fur sporran for evening dress and you won't go wrong.
There's a thought...why don't you make your wife a sporran style purse with the leftover tartan?
