Gordon Tartan Dilemma

I've finally relented and decided to replace my ancient dress Gordon Tartan kilt. As much as I love the tartan dearly its completely impractical and looks twice its age.


Wanting to stick to the Gordon (family) tartan what version of the tartan would you suggest and why?

The military version with the yellow stripes looks just really good. That's what I'd choose. It's subtle, yet it's also distinctive enough to be readily recognizable.

And I have one, so it must be OK.

As usual, I lean toward the Ancient and the Weathered. If I remember correctly, Turpin showed up for a Chicago event in a Weathered Gordon and it looked quite smashing. I suppose that the relative subtlety of these tartans is more of a contemporary look as opposed to the vivid colors of the standard Modern versions of the tartans. Full disclosure: I have some familial ties to Robertson (the family, not Pour1Malt...) and have a Robertson Ancient Hunting and a Robertson Hunting Muted but not the Robertson Red...

hmm.

I have a kilt in military weight Gordon Modern and it's lovely.

Really though I like the dress and red variations as well.

The dark subdued tones of the modern "regular" tartan match almost anything you throw on above or below it.

You don't see it too often & I think the colour combo in it makes it one of the most attractive weathered tartans around! (...the above picture doesn't do it justice)

At first glance I'd say that Marton Mills has a nice Ancient and House of Edwards a nice Modern both in 16 oz. The colours look good to me. Good for formal and easy to dress down.

Here's the weathered being worn. I didn't include pleats because it's a box pleat kilt and therefore likely of little or no interest to the Scottish members. The Lochcarron in this tartan (perhaps run-specific) is softer than other Lochcarron kilts I have.





And this pic might be the last time I wore white socks, so lay off!

After seeing the shades in Turpin's kilt, I vote for that. And Turpin, where did you get that belt and buckle? They're fantastic
