Hotels and Inns and places to stay

In a current thread about Tobermoray, Jock Scot made the suggestion:
"You have set me thinking Chris. Your recommendation is so helpful for those that might be visiting Mull in the near future. Perhaps we locals and recent visitors ought to do the same? Now I don't mean a full scale advertising campaign, with a list as long as our arm, that would be silly. A quiet bit of local knowledge, or recent experience like yours, could be most helpful to the not so local visitor. Well done."

What an excellent idea! I'll start off by writing that one of my favourite hotels in the Highlands is the Knipoch Hotel, just south of Oban on A816.
    http://www.knipochhotel.co.uk/

Sara and I have stayed there several times and love it! It is located on Loch Feochan, a beautiful sea loch. I have seen a number of otters cavorting just in front of the hotel. Behind the hotel is a trail to walk up into the hills, providing wonderful views of the surrounding region. The accommodations are comfortable; the food delicious. Absolutely delicious. I can highly recommend the Knipoch as a base for those planning to stay in this part of the Highlands. With Oban just ten or 15 minutes away, one can get to almost anywhere in that part of the world.

Here are some pics we have taken at (and around) the Knipoch.

Lovely shots, Loch Feochan is a beautiful spot. Here is an aerial view of Loch Feochan, which I took in June 2008.

I love this shot, Alex. I think the Knipoch Hotel is just out of the picture in the bottom left of the photo.

Having been given the idea for this thread from Jock Scot, I started it in full anticipation of the interesting replies I thought would come in...perhaps everyone was sleeping at the wheel? I know Jock and I are not the only ones who want to hear about Forumeers' favourite hotels in Scotland.

So...a wee bump to this thread!

Actually, for this local, your recommendations are just as valuable to me! When we have visitors coming to the area, and for various reasons they are not going to stay with us, it is very helpful to have a list of recommenations to hand. We do not tour the area with hotels, resteraunts uppermost in our minds, it may sound obvious, but us locals really do not know about these things, we normally don't need too. Yes we have our favorite watering hole, but we will have little idea what its like to stay there, or, what the breakfast is like. Come on chaps, lets give it a go. I am surprised that "Ferintosh" has not yet had a mention!

I can recommend the Old Pines Hotel, which is situated between Spean Bridge and Inverour. A short walk from the Commando Monument on the main Fort William to Inverness A82 road, and from the shores of Loch Lochy. About twenty minutes drive from Fort William. Ann and I stayed there several times when she was still able to travel. All the rooms are on the ground floor and are en suite and the breakfasts and evening dinners are absolutely superb. I do not appear to have any photos of the hotel itself but here is a shot taken on the road out front of the hotel, which illustrates the view from the dining room, including Ben Nevis, still with patches of snow around the summit in July.
